The Gunnison Orchestral and Vocal Academy (GOVA) is a premier summer program dedicated to cultivating artistry, collaboration, and excellence in music. Located in the breathtaking Colorado Rockies, GOVA provides young artists with world-class training in a supportive, inspiring environment.
Led by Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductee bass-baritone Keith Miller and Colorado Symphony Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams, GOVA combines rigorous instruction with a vibrant community, bringing together distinguished faculty and passionate students for unforgettable experiences in orchestral music, vocal performance, chamber music, and musical theatre.

Orchestral/Chamber Program
Join an elite roster of pro-track musicians for the 2026 season of the Gunnison Orchestral and Vocal Academy (GOVA). This intensive summer residency is designed to bridge the gap between conservatory training and a sustainable, thriving professional career. We are offering training to professional-track and advanced students aged 15+ for the following instruments:

Intensive Training Opportunities
The GOVA Orchestral Program focuses on technical precision and artistic growth through a highly personalized curriculum. We intentionally cast a specific, intimate roster so that no student sits at the back of the section; every player receives daily, direct mentorship.

Chamber Focus: All instrumentalists are placed in orchestra and chamber assignments to refine their collaborative skills.
Side-by-Side Performance
Gain unparalleled stage experience by performing our 2026 featured repertoire: Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" and Bizet's Carmen Suite No. 1.

Professional Integration: Fellows rehearse and perform sitting directly alongside Concertmasters and Principal players from major ensembles, including the Colorado Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, and Boulder Philharmonic.

Hosted on the campus of Western Colorado University, GOVA immerses you in the cinematic landscape of the Rocky Mountains. Training at altitude requires focus and stamina, and the breathtaking natural beauty provides ultimate creative inspiration. The residency includes housing, daily breakfast and dinner, and organized outdoor wellness excursions to help you recharge.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Expand your artistic horizons with unique collaborative experiences. This July, GOVA's vocal division for operatic and musical theater students and a Joffrey Concert Group-led dance workshop will run concurrently with your training. Take advantage of this special opportunity to network and socialize with talented students from other programs.
Recordings
All performances will be recorded, students will have unrestricted rights and access to their recordings after the conclusion of the program.

World-Class Vocal Training
Our Vocal Arts program provides intensive, personalized training to students ages 15+ with a focus on opera, art song, and musical theatre. You will learn from a faculty of internationally recognized artists, including:

The 11-day program culminates in an Opera Scenes performance directed by Sarah Meyers of the Metropolitan Opera, and the opportunity to appear in the Opera Aria Recital.
Unparalleled Collaborative Opportunities
A hallmark of the GOVA experience is the unique opportunity to collaborate with masters from other disciplines. Set against a stunning mountain backdrop, our program fosters a rich artistic exchange, allowing participants to work directly with:

Professional Performance Experience
Showcase your development in performances led by esteemed director Sarah Myers of the Metropolitan Opera and On Site Opera. The academy culminates in an arias concert and a fully-staged scenes program. All performances are recorded and live-streamed, and each student receives a high-quality copy for their personal portfolio.
Tuition
This program is Tuition Free. Vocal students will not be charged to attend this program.
Accepted Vocal Students will receive a $500 stipend to be used at their discretion throughout the duration of the program.

Audition Information
We invite talented instrumentalists and vocalists to audition for GOVA 2026.
Audition Requirements:

Orchestral/Chamber Auditions:

Concerto (first movement) of your choice, unaccompanied.

Three orchestral excerpts (specified by instrument).

Please find the required sheet music excerpts at our audition materials page.

One unaccompanied Bach selection or etude (String Instruments Only).

Selection of 5 arias (3 Languages recommended).

Singers may choose their opening aria, and may be asked for 1-2 additional pieces by the panel.

Applicants are responsible to provide their own pianist.

Depending on schedule, walk-in auditions may be available.

2 selections at the applicant's discretion, the two selections must vary in language and style.

Musical Theater applicants will submit two selections in contrasting styles.
